Unusually clear views of Welsh mountains
It's often possible to see the Welsh mountains (and even the Isle of Man, if you know where to look) from the Dublin and Wicklow mountains. But never as astonishingly clear and close as they seemed this afternoon. Rather than a saw-tooth of peaks on the horizon, you could see the full profile of the individual mountains, including the recognisable shape of Snowdon. You could clearly see the snow on top.

Literally, they looked like they were just offshore, no more than 20 km away (instead of 140 km). My first reaction when I saw them was confusion. There shouldn't be mountains there! Everyone I met on the hills was commenting on the phenomenon.

I feel like it must have been some kind of mirage or similar atmospheric effect that brought the image closer. Does anyone know what kind of atmospheric conditions would cause such an effect?
