"Arctic conditions in the Wicklows" from mcrtchly Contract pics
Picture: Arctic conditions in the Wicklows (Contract pics)

Wicklow weather - great but brutal conditions
Kernowclimber and I have just returned from snow shoeing up Lugnaquilla via the Zig-Zags from Glenmalure. Road conditions weren't too bad but a lot of compacted snow after Ballinaclash (we opted to use snow chains from here onwards along the Glenmalure valley). Snow conditions on lug were fantastic with in places 2 feet or more of snow. The snow was quite soft and upward progress was made much easier by snow shoes. The weather on top was Arctic with strong winds (40km/hr+) driving spindrift high into the air. It must have been at least -10C with the wind chill. A fantastic opportunity to witness the Wicklow Mountains in such amazing conditions (and no bog to be seen!).

Tooreenbaha, above the Rabach's Glen at the start (or finish!) of the circuit. Knockatee is the distinctive hill in the background.

A view of Knockowen from Tooreenbaha. The Healy Pass is the gap on the right of the picture and the road can be seen rising across the slopes.
