Silly Season
I was delighted to see a section of last Mountainview’s newsletter devoted to ‘Questions for Canvassers in relation to Hillwalking’. The significance of this was brought home to me forcefully when I picked up my local paper and saw the headline ‘Labour bill sucks up to suburban ramblers’. The article in question is a rant by Tim O’Malley (PD) and John Cregan (FF) on how the proposed legislation by labour would ‘allow hillwalkers trample over farmers land’. They went on to claim that what the labour party had announced is ‘nothing less than the nationalisation of all private property over 150 metres above sea level’. Deputy O’Malley said that ‘it represents a full-blown assault on the commercial farming sector’. Nice to see such reasoned and well informed responses on such a sensitive issue. The silly season is truly upon us.
