Mountain Biking and more
I think most walkers would agree with Wounded Huzzar about the unfortunate effects of mountain biking in uphill areas. But even the damage that mountain bikes can do seems to pale in comparison to what is being done here and there by powerful quad bikes. With their four broad tractor-like tyres, they gouge out deep ruts that accelerate erosion and deface the mountain. For example, running up a good part of the SW side of Lugnaquillia in Wicklow (the Slievemaan approach) are two such parallel lines that have appeared in recent times. Since the gradient here is almost at the limit of what a quad can manage, wheelspin is inevitable, so even the rocky surface has been deeply scarred. It's unsightly, but it's just a further testimony to man's invasive push to bring his crazy machines with him everywhere.
