"Remains of footbridge at Barravore" from hobob Contract pics
Picture: Remains of footbridge at Barravore (Contract pics)

Flash flood damage Glenmalure
Last Monday 6th September there was massive flash flooding all along the Glenmalure Valley. Several bridges along the glen were destroyed including this one the wooden footbridge at Barravore. There were at least 7 landslides with a particularly obvious one at the zigzags parallel to the waterfall. The hostel and at least one house was flooded; the river up near the hostel has partially changed route; and whole new streams have been opened up. The track on up towards Table Mountain has had all the gravel and sand taken off it and is nothing but bare rocks and boulders. Seems like sudden cloud burst on ground dry from weeks of sun caused massive immediate run-off. One elderly local I spoke to said he'd never seen anything like it. Certainly makes you think about the massive forces of nature even in our Wicklow hills.

Slieveboy: Default hill

I've forgotten how many times I've gone up this hill, must be over 50. I live relatively close so its the easy option when larger 'expeditions' are a non starter. It has a very decent balcony walk...

Sugarloaf Hill: Easy access and log book to sign

Sugarloaf Hill is usually climbed from Bay Lough Car Park, S03056 09981, ample parking there. Cross the road and follow the wall and the eroded path all the way up, it's steep enough but you'll re...

The famous side of Slieve Beg is the NE, gashed by the Devils Coachroad. However the SE side also has its drama.Taken on a frosty slippy day from Cove.

Dromderalough NE Top: Odd-looking formations

On my approach to the summit I came across a large field of hundreds of these rather striking formations, which I think are are moss-covered boulders, but which looked like giant green ant-hills o...

My final Vandeleur-Lynam! Unfortunately No. 273 wasn't the most distinctive summit (when I came off Mangerton I couldn't even pick it out on the landscape) , but the views from the top are tremend...

Dromderalough NE Top: Long route from the south.

Not normally done in isolation, this top usually forms part of a walk involving Dromderalough itself or Mangerton. One approach is from the north, which has the advantage of a gently rising track ...
