walking in to trouble
With reference to leaving cars before heading out on to the hills.... maybe I'm lucky in that my car has never been broken in to whilst it has been parked when I'm up on the hills. I've parked in Glenmalure, even the dreaded Slieve Gullion and all over the Mournes. In the recent past I've tended to park outside a pub, the Glenmalure Inn seems safe enough plenty of people coming and going and driving by, from there you can walk in many directions - maybe a little longer than planned but still the car is that bit safer. In the Mournes I tend to park in Tollymore, Rostrevor town etc. Having seen the way the Swiss hike around their magnificent mountains and experienced the trains and cable car system, I now find myself using public transport that bit more. On a recent trip up Maulin, I took the bus to Enniskerry and walked up from there - it's amazing to see what we miss as we speed by in our cars, yes a few extra miles but very much worth while. I haven't been on the mountains for a while as I'm training for 2 marathons in a week later in the year, if I succeed which I intend to do - I'll be treating myself to a short break in Meiringen in Switzerland!!!
