Re Mourne Features
JK - to the best of my knowledge - which isn't great - its a relatively recent development in terms of mourne geology. Most of the underlying rock and sub soil was formed by the sinking of shale into the mantle which resulted in a batholith ie the Mourne Massive. However various changes were inflicted by the last ice age when glaciers scraped out the valleys you refer to. You'll notice they are mostly "chair shaped" or "Corries". As the ice sheets retreated, vast quantities of sand and stone deposited by the melting ice were left covering the coastal plain to a depth of several feet; shallow near the base of the hills and thicker near the coast. As I said, I could be wrong, but if I am thinking about the same substance then this might be the reason.
