BEARING COMPASSES
Yes dhmiriam. I seem to have missed a fight which disappoints me no end. Regarding map and compass, I did once have a girlfriend who gave me a map and compass but that was a very long time ago. Learned without any books. Just trial and error. Nearly always the best way or at least until you are given a map and compass. Couldn't be easier. Run long edge of compass along imaginery line (on the map) from where you are to where you want to be. Turn compass housing so that printed arrow points North on the map. Lift compass off map and set magnetic arrow to North. The printed arrow will now tell you which way to go. That has just saved you twenty quids. Rule No2. Don't use 1:50s maps unless you want to die. They don't show all crags. Use 1:25s or 1:30s. Rule No3. Even when you are convinced the compass is wrong it is not. Enjoy and be good enough to flag up next time you are heading North. Also a trick. When you buy a new map, spend a half an hour folding at all the gridlines. Seems endless but what it means is later it will fold any way you want when everybody else's is trying to paraglide them off the hill.
