Isolation & Remoteness
Simon3 recently informed us that Croghan Hill in the North Midlands is the summit that is furthest from any other summit in Ireland. It is 31.9 kms from the next nearest hill. I was wondering what people might consider to be the most remote summit in Ireland-if we take remote to mean a mixture of distance from roads, houses, facilities, people and man made noise. (airplanes sadly cannot be avoided!). I think people have suggested the mountains of North Mayo as contenders due to the vast bogs in that area. It is possible to walk in Wicklow and the Mournes etc and not meet others-indeed you could spend a week on some of the small outliers of the Wicklow Mountains and not see a sinner. But where is the true heart of Isolation in the Hills and Mountains of Ireland?
