Bleck Cra-thanks for the daisies advice. I had already gone to a shop and bought boots before I read your post. I had done all that scientific stuff you spoke about (like trying the boots on.) The new boots are going right back to the shop as they are too small (I was sized by the pro in the shop) Also they are too rigid-so I’m going to change to the semi-rigid you recommend. I’m looking forward to the hours of Nikwax reverie as I’m choosing leather too! But it all might be to no avail-no more walking allowed in the mountains except on trails apparently, and only when it’s not raining.
