Whiddy Island is a short ferry ride from Bantry Bay. As I was under time constraints to be back on the mainland to watch Clare loose another Munster final, we made a quick walk from the quay to the Battery on a hill on the North of the island. It's possible to enjoy a longer walk around a loop of the island which passes an old church and two lakes which I would recommend. If you are going for a quick summit bag head North along the road from the quay for a few hundred meters. Take the road on the right at A (V96842 49682). Less than a kilometre along this road hop the gate at B (V97157 49994) and the last few hundred meters will see you to the battery at the summit. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/island/2474/comment/20201/

The middle battery, the highest point on Whiddy is now part of the Whiddy Heritage Trail with way markers to the top of the hill and easy access over a set of wooden steps. The top can be reached in about 15 minutes from the harbour or can be left to the end of the heritage trail if you head in a clockwise direction at the beginning.
