A powerful and emotive occasion

The graveyard by the abbey ruins was still being used in the 90s (and probably still is), and one of the most atmospheric things I've ever seen was a funeral here. Late in the year, with hail showers scudding across the sand as the coffin was carried over the beach, with 50 or so locals in nothing but black. Could have been any century in the last six. Beach access and graveyard.

This view was taken from the short strip of beach joining the mainland to the island. As you can see vehicles or at least tractors can reach the island though it isn't suitable for cars.
The way is definitely possible on foot at lower tide levels though may not be useable at high tide or with high waves.
