COMMENTS for Gull Island South 1 of 1
A Kingdom of Cormorants
by Pepe  11 Aug 2018
Plenty of room to park at Ballyvoony cove. Gull Island lies about half a kilometre to the southwest, with a small outcrop of rocks directly to the south of the island. I gave Gull Island South - and its rocks - a wide berth in circumnavigating it, no safe landing place being apparent for a lone kayaker. The cormorants stood up top with wings held out in mock-combative mode, trying to scare me off. I gave them a wave and let them have their high point.
There is a wonderful dog-leg sea cave about two or three hundred metres to the east of Ballyvoony cove, one of many such caves along this fabulous coastline. The cave is ideal for exploration in a 9 or 10 foot kayak. Any longer craft would have difficulty turning within the cave. I cursed myself for not having a headtorch, and was not able to explore it fully. Trackback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/2399/comment/20009/
