Located in the mouth of the river Shannon, Scattery Island packs a punch for it's small size. Included in the ferry price is a guided tour of the monastic sites on the island. Afterwards you will have time to explore the lighthouse and battery on the Southern end of the island. Be aware that access to the high point on the island is currently restricted due to nesting birds. But at only 14 meters height I'm sure missing out on it won't take from your experience of the island. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/island/2359/comment/20588/

A very pleasant day out

Visited as part of the very worthwhile OPW guided tour of the island’s monastic settlement. Access to the high point is included as part of the tour. There may be restrictions in spring or early summer when hen harrier chicks are fledging but by the second half of September they appear to have left for the season.
