Approaches
Coming from Dublin go south on the M11/ N11 to Kilmacanogue. Turn right onto the R755 which goes through Roundwood. In Roundwood near the Coach House follow the turn right marked Lough Dan 5km. Take the first left, then right, then left over a bridge to a T-junction, the start. There's some parking at 158019 (Point A) and 159008 (Point B) and 155024 (Point C).

Alternative start, without car
From Laragh take the Wicklow Way north to Paddock Hill where you can join the path leading to Scarr. Follow the route described here to the finish. Then follow the route described from the start to the open ground at T149 997 (Point D) from where you can pick up the route south to Laragh.

Start
Head south on the road from the T-junction. You are following the Wicklow Way which is marked on the OS 1:50k map. You will first rise then fall as you walk over a SE ridge coming from Scarr known as Drumray. The road rises about 20m where you follow the Wicklow Way signed path turning right at 158996 (Point E) . Leave the path at around 149 997 (Point D) (Brusher Gap) from where you should see Scarr to your right.

Points visited
On a good day as you ascend Scarr you will see views south towards the Glendalough valley and the mass of summits in southern Wicklow. The summit of Scarr is often extremely windy or at least in the prevailing SW winds due to its shape. There is an unpleasantly walker eroded track towards the odd humpy summits of Brown Mountain (Kanturk) which you walk through. From Brown Mountain head east along a col and then slowly rising spur (which reaches 406m) to a track at 148037 (Point F). Cross this track turning right onto a scenic path, follow this path (very muddy in Jan 2007) parallel to the track until it emerges onto the track at 149031 (Point G), turn left and walk on the track or road to return to your car.
The growth of trail erosion from Scarr towards Kanturk, now substantial, can be established by referring to the "Glenmacnass" map surveyed by the now defunct Tiglin Adventure Centre in 1984. It showed no track of any sort there.

Variant finish
There is a longer variant from Brown Mountain. Descend to 124040 (Point H) then north from 129042 (Point I) through the forest to a track from which you take a muddy path further north to the Inchavore river eventually reaching 139042 (Point J) the end of the track east that the main version describes.

Point A: O158 019 Point B: O159 008 Point C: O155 024
Point D: T149 997 Point E: T158 996 Point F: O148 037
Point G: O149 031 Point H: O124 040 Point I: O129 042
Point J: O139 042 (turn area map On)
