Overview
Walk length: 12.1km   Ascent: 381m   Duration (without stops): 3:30 h:mm
Making the best of this area by incorporating Sorrel Hill turns this walk into a very pleasant west Wicklow day out. Starting at the entrance to Carrig Wood and heading for the dizzy heights of Lugnagun, you then swing east to summit Sorrell Hill. The return journey brings you down the Gap Road and then contours across the mountain side to re-enter Carrig Wood lower down. This forest track brings you back by a picturesque walk to your vehicle.

Approaches
It is best to come at this walk from the Blessington direction. At the western end of Lugnagun take a sharp left turn up the steep hill to Carrig Wood. Continue all the way up to the first forest gate where there is space to leave up to three vehicles. Just ensure that they are parked in a tidy fashion as farmers may need access to these tracks.

Start
Start at the entrance O00278 12315 (Point A) to Carrig Wood. There is parking for about three cars. Head straight up the forest track until you reach O01433 11886 (Point B) where you double back to your left.

Points visited
Follow this track up and around while enjoying the views out west over Blessington. When you reach O01131 12321 (Point C) swing left and head up to the forest boundary fence and then turn right for the lost heights of Lugnagun. Do not be surprised if you can not locate the actual summit – it's around there somewhere! From Lugnagun head west along the forest edge directly towards Sorrel Hill. It is quite level all along here until it drops slightly to a saddle before rising up towards the summit. It is a fair climb from this saddle up on to the summit, but you will be handsomely rewarded by a lovely cairn and stunning vista at the top. Having suitably enjoyed the views, swing south down the track towards O04387 10862 (Point D) the Gap car-park. Meeting the road, turn right and head down the Gap Road. Some way down at O03010 11145 (Point E) contour to your right across the hillside following the old grassy track. When you reach the edge of the forest turn right and climb a short distance to O02476 11583 (Point F) the upper entrance. There is a stile to the right of this gate. Head west north west along the lower track all the way to the other side of the forest to O00886 11786 (Point G) where there is an exit gate.

Finish
From this exit gate it is only a short distance along the dirt track to where you meet the tarmac road at the barrier. Continue on down the cul-de-sac road to where you parked your vehicle.
