Approaches
Most walkers tend to approach Black Hill from the car park near Sorrel Hill. That is then just a walk up the track on to the summit. That is fine it you just want to conquer the mountains in the vicinity. But you have missed out the very best parts that are hidden below you.
So, the easiest way is to come from Blessington and head along the Lake Drive towards Lacken. Alternately approach from either the Wicklow Gap or Hollywood and head towards Ballynockan and then on to Lacken. You may also come up from Ballysmuttan Bridge.
|
Start
Depending on the number of cars, park at the the bottom O020 101 (Point A) of Lodge Lane. Otherwise, it would be better to park at Lacken and walk down to the bottom of Lodge Lane. There is quite a pull up the start of Lodge Lane, so the warm up might be advisable!

Points visited:
About 150m up this lane you will pass John Balfe's Cottage (on the left) O02207 10202 (Point B) where the film Captain Boycott was shot in the 1940's. Continue on up the lane, keeping right at the road junction, until O031 103 (Point C) where you will see the large sign for the official access route on to Black Hill on your right-hand side. Walk in the access gap alongside a stream. Where this path opens out on the hill you will then see guidance marker posts leading you east up towards the Green Lane.
The Green Lane junction is the boundary to the National Park area. This grassy Green Lane is the Irish equivalent of the Yellow Brick Road. The views out over the lake and valley from along this track are just magical.
Follow this old bog road all the way to O03132 09080 (Point D) where there is a standing stone monument to some RAF airmen who, during WWII, got lost in bad weather and crashed their plane into the mountain, killing all on board. These men were buried at the Church of Ireland in Blessington. Their relations still come to visit the scene on their anniversary.
Continue to follow this track until O034 089 (Point E) where you will swing east to head directly past some old turf banks to O041 090 (Point F) and the summit . Do not forget to stop every now and then to look around, as these panoramic views are hard to beat. From the summit, it is a simple matter of heading due north for the car-park at Sorrel Gap O044 108 (Point G) where you swing west and head down the Gap Road to Lacken village. Richardson's shop in Lacken should have any refreshments you require.
|
Finish
At Lacken take time to admire the beautiful old cut-stone schoolhouse, built in 1869 by generosity of the famous Elizabeth Smith of Baltyboys. Depending on where you left your transport you swing left at the old schoolhouse and follow the Lake Drive back down to the bottom of Lodge Lane.
