Walk Guide 130 for
|
Glendalough to Sally Gap (and back)
|
Maintainer: Mulciber
(Guide rating: 3.00) |
Overview
Walk length: 43.3km Ascent: 2000m Duration (without stops): 10:00 h:mm This is a long day in the hills which will give you hard walking and great views. But be warned there are no quick ways back to your car. As there are two rivers to cross, Cloghoge Brook and the Inchavore River
its best to do this walk after a dry spell.. I did this in April when the Bracken on Kanturk was dead making an easy ascent and both rivers were low.. See Track 1431, for gps info

Points visited
Heading uphill to the saddle head for your first of the day, Brockage, Its a nice muddy walk across to
Tonelagee (short nasty climb) which warms up the legs nicely. You should be able to see the whole walk from here, with Scarr just across the way. Onwards to Stoney Top, winding your way through the Peat Hags head for Barnnacullian, keeping right for the "Green Road" and enjoying the views into Glenmacnass valley. You now turn your thoughts to Mullaghcleevaun, uphill again.Reaching and leaving the Trig, go and have a look at Cleevaun lough and the wide open land to the North and North west. its nice walking to East Top a little boggy in patches, the large boulders let you know your there.Duff is next with a steep descent into the boggy saddle before climbing to Gravale, from here to Carrigvore the land is very wet and muddy and can be slow going, the last pull to Carrigvore seems to take forever. Still your halfway now, (13km as the crow flies to your car) Head downhill to the Carpark (O1375 0875 (Point B)) as its easier under foot, or head staight for Knocknacloghoge, either way
this next section is long, flat and marshy in spots. After leaving the road I head forthe low at O1362 0612 (Point C) then head up to the rocky top.Heading downhill towards the Inchavore take your time as the ground is steep and rocky over the river, I find it easier to head to (1395 0488 (Point D)) then go towards Johnnys oaks, curving down to the river. That over, cross the meadow to O1385 0430 (Point E) then start a long slow climb to Kanturk, at the start the lower slopes are covered in bracken then higher up lots of heather, Leaving Kanturk start your last climb of the day heading towards Pt 561 and then onwards towards windy Scarr. From Scarr the route is spread out before you, When done enjoying the views head downhill to Paddock hill
|
Finish
Its a long descent to Paddock Hill where you pick up the Wicklow Way and follow it all the way back to your starting point.. This last couple of Km's are on tracks and paths, easy under foot
