Ascent from the Tourist Path
by sandilandsn  13 Sep 2012
I climbed this summit in August 2011. The approach from Glen Nevis looks extremely steep so I joined the hordes on the tourist path and climbed to within 120m of the summit of Ben Nevis before dropping down towards Carn Dearg SW. After the fourth zig-zag I stayed on the old path and descended at around the Southern extremity of the zig-zag. There is a descent of around 240m to the shallow col below Carn Dearg. Conditions were misty and care was needed on the steep and rocky descent to ensure that I didn't stray onto steeper ground either side or miss the col. Once the col was reached a short easy ascent led to the summit. In brighter conditions I might have had a superb view of the Mamores. I returned by the same route making the steep ascent back to the tourist path. On the return I made a short diversion to bag Meall an-t Suidhe. Visibility was much better by then and Carn Dearg SW can just be seen at the right hand side of the photo which I took from the summit.
