COMMENTS for The Calf 1 of 1
Howgill Fells, Yorkshire Dales
Short Summary created by brenno,  17 Jun 2013
The Howgill Fells in north west Yorkshire are undiscovered gems and the Calf at 676m is the highest point. Lovely walking country - no heather, no peat hags, most of the mountains are covered by short grass with plenty of tracks. Easiest access is from the lovely town of Sedbergh - lots of accommodation, restaurants, pubs with great local beer, bookshops (Sedbergh is a "book town") - and you can start the walk up the Calf directly from town. Calf can easily be incorporated into a looped route taking in the Cautley Spout waterfall/ Harveys map "Howgill Fells" covers the entire area. Access from Ireland easy - either fly into Leeds/Bradford and hire a car - takes about 2 hours to get to Sedbergh - or take the car onto the ferry and take the M6 NORTH.
