Picture: Y Lliwedd from the Watkin Path
Riding a crest of rock
by kernowclimber  1 Oct 2013
Y Lliwedd with its twin east and west peaks is the second part of the Snowdon horseshoe. Although not as exposed as Crib Goch, it nonetheless provides some great scrambling and offers impressive views down into the gaping amphitheatre of Cwm Uchaf with its blue-green lake and the incredibly blue Llyn Llydaw bisected by the Miners' Track far below. Care should be taken descending the Watkin Path which is very steep with lots of loose rock and scree. Approaching the foot of Y Lliwedd it looks quite impenetrable, but the path threads its way up the ridge with ease through the boulders and scree. From this undulating crest of rock there are panoramic views across the cwm to Crib Goch where we could see the minute silhouettes of climbers tackling the knife edge ridge. Care is needed to descend the ridge after the large cairn as the way over rocky ledges is prone to being slippery. Lower down the path becomes more defined and a made up track brings you to the shores of Llyn Llydaw. From here the route eventually joins the Miners Track which takes you back to the car park at Pen-y-pass. The horseshoe should take no longer than around 6 hours, but we took considerably more time having enjoyed a very leisurely lunch at the restaurant atop Snowdon, chatting to a friend we bumped into at the top of the Pyg Track at Bwlch Glas, and shooting a lot of video to bring you a film which we hope you will enjoy!
