The sinuous spine of Wales
by kernowclimber  1 Oct 2013
One of Britain's favourite hill-walks, the Snowdon Horseshoe involves some very exposed ridge walking and airy scrambling to the highest mountain in Wales. In the fine weather we had, it was a really exhilarating experience. The walk starts from the Pen y Pass car park (be prepared to pay a whopping £10 to park here for the day!) above the Llanberis Pass and traverses the Pyg Track to Bwlch y Moch. Here, behind a newly built wall, a path on the right leads up to Crib Goch's steep and rocky eastern flank. This provides a fine climb with fabulous views down to Llyn Llydaw and a good prelude to the ridge itself, where a delightful section of hands on scrambling and a traverse of a knife edge arête await. The ridge most certainly isn’t for the faint hearted as it is very exposed in places and you will definitely need a head for heights! It should not be undertaken in poor weather, particularly high wind. We were extremely fortunate to have had perfect weather with incredible visibility, but that said, we didn’t try to be heroes by traversing the very top of the ridge, but stepped down slightly to the left and used the rocky top as a handrail. Fortunately the rock was pretty competent, although there were several incidences where I felt it move as I grabbed hold of it, and I tried therefore to ensure that I had my other hand firmly round something more substantial before I moved on! Like us, most people will probably be concentrating so hard that they will barely notice that they have passed over the highest point on Crib Goch! After such a challenging and exhilarating scramble, the best we’ve had in years, we enjoyed a very leisurely lunch at the Hafod Eryri Summit Shelter where we celebrated bagging Wales’ highest peak with a bottle of aptly named Snowdon beer and Welsh pitman’s oggies before setting off to tackle the twin peaks of Y Lliwedd on the second half of the horseshoe.
