The name Mount Alto is quite recent and it seems likely that it was given by the Tighe family, local landowners whose residence was at Woodstock House near Inistioge, at the foot of the hill. Máire MacNeill (234) suggests that Sceachánach is likely to   Mount Alto is the 984th highest summit in Ireland.

by jackill  8 Mar 2010 I started from oldsoldiers coordinates and walked up the track, turning left at the first junction and right at the next, to the summit which is marked by no more than a few conifers and some bog.On the way down I noticed a roof of sorts poking out of the tree tops to my left. I eventually found this structure surrounded by briars and trees on all sides, a viewing point once for Woodstock House?

by oldsoldier  25 Jan 2010 Mount alto is a very easy walk for any level of fitness. I followed larrylampwick's directions, but he forgot to mention there is a 4 charge to park in the car park. Instead I retreated form Woodstock and followed the road out of Inistioge as far as the cross roads at S 63855 35666 (Point B) signposted Ballyshame with waymarked post also. Here there is parking for several cars and the walk is much shorter. can be walked in 30 minutes. Nice heart starter in the morning before work.

by larrylampwick  28 Dec 2009 An easy and rewarding climb from the car park at Woodstock Gardens. Good views over the valley of the river Arrigle to the Comeraghs, Slievenaman, and up to Kilkenny City. Be sure to call to the tea room in the gardens on the journey back to the car. This is situated in the reconstructed round conservatory. Allow about 1 and a half hours.
