P.W. Joyce preferred the interpretation Cnoc na Riaghadh, 'hill of the executions'. Cnoc na Riogha, 'hill of the kings', has also been suggested. The huge cairn on the summit plateau is called Meascán Méabha, 'Maeve's mound'. It is considere   Knocknarea is the 934th highest summit in Ireland. Knocknarea is the most northerly summit in the Ox Mountains area.

busy hill..
by scannerman  19 Aug 2012 Took a sortie up Knocknarea last week after heavy rain ran every single other vistor! I had'nt realised it is such a busy place. Very interesting though and some great views in every direction ..
