Named Sliabh Copanach in Cinnlae Amhlaoibh Uí Shúileabháin (Diary of Humphrey O'Sullivan), it is mentioned as one of the hills which the diarist is able to see from his home near Callan. Also spelt Cappanagh.   Coppanagh is the 1019th highest summit in Ireland. Coppanagh is the second highest point in county Kilkenny.
