One of the most recognisible peaks of Mourne and perhaps the only one that necessitates removing hands from pockets. Slieve Bernagh gets its name from the two rocky granite tors which crown the summit and the gap or saddle betweeen them.   Slieve Bearnagh is the 83rd highest summit in Ireland.

A special place
by paulocon  18 Sep 2012 Two years ago, I reached Bearnagh a broken man during a circuit of the Mourne Wall which had started early that morning at Carrick Little. My climb up the steep slopes had been so traumatic that all memory of this mountain had been wiped clean from my mind well before the aches had left my legs. I did make it round the route of the wall but so much of my resolve and determination had been left on the slopes of Bearnagh.

Prior to another walk of the wall this year, the walk from Meelmore to the top of Bearnagh had taken on epic proportions in my head. I pictured myself spending several days dragging myself up the impossibly steep face of the mountain whilst glancing longingly at the impressive summit tors that would be my goal.

As so often is the case when you've built something up in your mind, this time the experience was so different. My cause was helped when I met 2 Hungarians, one of which was on the hills for the first time and was struggling even more than I had when last on Bearnagh. As I left them halfway up the mountain, I could hear the mountain-virgin utter some Hungarian expletives at his walking companion, presumably vowing never to return to such ill-adventure.

I only hope he reached the summit as it is just reward for all the hard work and offers a wonderful viewpoint for taking in the Mournes. The view over Ben Crom, Lough Shannagh and the gathering of mountains must be another contender for the best in Ireland. All round, the landscape was darkened and peppered with rain-showers whilst I stood in glorious sunshine.

A special place indeed!
