A good day on Coumfea
by Buny Clare  22 May 2010
Our second trip last Friday was, I am happy to say, a success. In contrast to our first
Trip the weather was good except for a few hail showers.
From the Gap car park (S276 128 A) we saw clearly the outline of our planned walk. Coumfea to the west,The Spilloge Loughs, Coumalocha, the Gap and Knockanaffrin Ridge.
Walking NW down the road for 500 m, go through a gate on the left, follow a track which will give you access to the open moorland. Roughly SE will bring you to the western shoulder of Coumfea…
Took some photographs of Lough Coumfea and Coumalocha and found enough rock providing shelter from the NE winds which allowed us to take some refreshments in comfort.
(S279 101 B). Great views down to the sea and the Dungarvan area,.
Easy going then along the plateau rim, on fairly firm ground. We came to the waterfall
at S300 112 C and saw the old lady puffing her pipe.
I walked uphill for 500m and reached what I assume was the Head of Coumlara (S 294 114 D).
We decided not to go to Knockanaffrin and shortly after crossing a stream well above the falls we worked our way northwards and after descending a steep-sided spur we commenced our descent before The Gap and walking generally west back to the car park...
