Knockane Hill An Cnocán A name in Irish

ITM: 584440 666893,   GPS IDs, 6 char: Knckn, 10 char: Knockane

This hill is named Knockane Ichyatow in the Civil Survey of 1654-56, where it is mentioned as part of the boundary of the barony of Owney and Arra. The second part of this name may represent the genitive of the surname Ó Céatfhadha, still found in this   Knockane is the 785th highest summit in Ireland.

Updated Summary Easy though rough to get to, great views.
Short Summary created by simon3, jackill  Fri 24 May Park at a forest entrance R850 665 (Point A) , room for 5 cars, walk into the forest right at R844 663 (Point B) which will bring you through the forest onto moorland. As it peters out you have a rough 200 meter crossing this moor to the summit.
Note : the road that this entrance is on is marked in the Discovery series of maps as unpaved, as of 2009 it has a good tarmac surface which I followed all the way to the paved road to the south of the Silvermines near Cooleyhorney.
Another way up is via the Slieve Felim way. Leave this at R8389 6729 (Point C). Go south and take a left turn after about 1500m, follow the track to a T junction turn right, then take a left turn until you reach open ground and the summit area.
Perhaps the quickest way up is to park at around R850 668 (Point D) Go uphill and east through mature trees eventually emerging onto the rough heather of the summit area.

by simon3  8 Mar 2009 Knockane isn't so exciting, still it has a good view of Keeper Hill from the East and views of the Silvermines.

We got there from Knockfune E top, however the route isn't easy - see piece on Knockfune E.

Looking at the map I would reckon the best place to reach it would be from the apparent forest entrance at 850664 (Point E). We were on this track - follow it to 844633 (Point F) where you turn NE and go about 600m to the top.

To get towards Keeper Hill you need to get through the immediate trees. Do this by going E. You are funnelled into a rough, steeply descending ride. Come to a track and turn left on this, keep right, until it meets another track going N. This should bring you into sight of tracks to Keeper.

I parked at R850 665 and turned right at R844 663 to get to the summit overlooked by the ancient gods of Keeper knees still working!
(by the way I used a car to get from Knockfune E Top)

A top with a view, if nothing else !
by acorn  27 Apr 2013 I drove to forestry entrance R850 665 where I startled a family of grazing deer. The forestry track will bring you to R844 663 where you turn right and continue along the track until it emerges from the forestry and comes to an end at a turning circle R846 666 (Point G). The summit is on your left, about 200m across rough ground. Great view of Keeper.
