This hill is named Knockane Ichyatow in the Civil Survey of 1654-56, where it is mentioned as part of the boundary of the barony of Owney and Arra. The second part of this name may represent the genitive of the surname Ó Céatfhadha, still found in this corner of Tipperary, and anglicised Keaty (when not adapted to the more common name Keating). If so, Knockane Ichyatow would represent Ir. Cnocán Uí Chéatfhadha, 'Keaty's hillock'.
Knockane is the 890th highest place in Ireland. Trackback: http://mountainviews.ie/summit/779/?PHPSESSID=1muba4mebfb049qsqccla1qqq3
