Picture: Even a mountain view cannot make him happy

by padodes  11 Jun 2008 Back in March, I took a washed-out photo of Slievecorragh’s mascot under what was still a cold, wintry sky. I think the summer snap I got the other day was much more colourful, but who can cure Teddy of his chronic depression?

Picture: So near and yet so far
by padodes  11 Jun 2008 Returning to Slievecorragh recently, I had the plan to get from there to its bigger neighbour, Church Mountain, due south. Well, it is possible, but probably only a confirmed masochist would find it pleasant. If you drop south from the top of Slievecorragh, you will find the heather soon gives way to rocky outcrops and rocking boulders. Every step has to be tested. As you approach the valley floor, a fence with a steep embankment of briars on the other side is the next obstacle. Beyond it, you cross over Kevin’s Way – little more than a boreen – and continue on over another fence (or gate) across sheep-grazing land. There is quite possibly an issue of access here, although I saw none of the unfriendly signs that appear on the western side of Church. Things don’t get easier further on, either. As you climb uphill, a wall of mature forest soon looms up in front, with no visible breach that might take you quickly to the top. All you can do is head off to the left, using the forest edge as a handrail to guide your steps up to the shoulder between Church and Corriebracks. Turning right, Church is just a short haul to the top. At least, with its large cairn, it offers some reward for all the effort. (The photo is of Church Mountain from Slievecorragh.)
