Eskaheen is a townland in the parish of Muff. It is said that Eoghan died of grief for his brother, Conall Gulban, and was buried here. According to Colgan it received its named from a fine spring where anciently existed a monastery [PWJ, vol. 1, 446].   Eskaheen Mountain is the 748th highest summit in Ireland.

by gerrym  10 Jul 2010 Access to the hill is eased by travelling high up the road to Grania's Gap where views are already stunning across Lough Foyle and Benevinagh. Starting point is from a newly constructed industrial scale forest entrance at 437274 (Point A), where there is room for a number of vechiles to park.

Continue up the road on foot to the high point of the Gap, accessing an old track (can also park here) to a small disused quarry - climbing above to open hillside. Views open up along Scalp Mtn to its forested sides and masts. The ground looks like it would normally be pretty wet and a large number of cottontails were enjoying dancing in the strong breeze. The exposed remains of old trees hinted at earlier, perhaps better times on the hill.

Views now extend over Lough Swilly and the high hills of Donegal to the west, with Scalp separating the panorama from the Derryveaghs to the Bluestacks. To the north Slieve Snaght was capped by dark clouds pushed in on the strong NW wind. The numerous windfarms in the area were earning thier money today.

A fencline heads NE towards the summit, becoming a ragged line of old posts. The journey along the hill is not particulary exciting but the views do help. There are a number of new fences at the broad summit area and the top is a matter of which mound do you think is highest? A small cairn to the E is definitely not the highest point but provided shelter and great views over Lough Foyle and the city of Derry, reached in one hour.

Could return same way but i dropped off SW to the forest boundary and had great fun in finding a way down through the trees, mainly following a small stream and eventually reaching the forest track which returned me to the car. Not a hill i think i would visit again but it provided an enjoyable enough couple of hours and did have great views.

A worthwhile short walk, go and enjoy!
by Harry Goodman  18 Jul 2011 I walked up Eskaheen Mt. on Monday 4 July 2011 during a day spend visting a number of the smaller tops on Inishowen. I parked opposite an old disused quarry entrance at C4298627692 (Point B) and walked up the short track, more or less due N, and then up and around the quarry heading for the ridge and the lower top of Garranbane. When I reached a fence C4323128419 (Point C) I turned right and followed it NE in the direction of Eskaheen Mt. Where a fence turned off to the right at a right angle I crossed over and and followed a line of old fence posts making for the high point at C4409028671 (Point D) some 1.9 k into the walk. This is a top of great confusion as to just where the highest point lies on the broad peat hummocked moorland top and added to by a jumble of crossing fences. Using a GPS and the mv co-ordinates I found they tended to place me on a lower point than some other contenders for the top. After walking around for some time I concluded that C4449028671 (Point E) was as likely a spot as any other but I am sure others who visit the top will have their own opinion. If nothing else it may encourage some mv members to go and see for themselves. In this regard I consider it a very worthwhile short walk. The views are first class across to Scalp Mt to the SW. To the NW I had a fine view across to Slieve Snaght and its satellites of Damph and Slieve Main. From the top I headed down SW to the corner of the forest at C4348128194 (Point F) and then continued on down to my starting point C4298627692 (Point B). To avoid a large marshy patch of ground lower down I suggest it is best to make directly for the old quarry and walk the short distance out by the access path. Back at the car I was approached by a farmer on a tractor asking me if I had been walking on the hill. When I said I had he then asked if there were any other walkers about. Apparently someone had parked a car further along the road but did not pull it off road thus blocking access for his and other farm vehicles! Where I was parked allowed room off road for one car. Total distance walked 4.1k over reasonable ground in an easy one and a half hours. From the parking spot on Grannia's Gap there would appear to be several interesting route possibilities for climbing Scalp Mt.
