Climbed Camenabologue as part of my Lugnaquillia route on Sunday 6th September 2009, setting out from the Baravore carpark at Glenmalur at T066942 A then crossed the footbridge across the Avonbeg river. Went along the gravel track to the Youth hostel then shortly afterwards turned left along the uphill track. Followed the track that skirts the Benleagh forestry upto the Fraughn Rock glen. Proceeded up along the side of the river gully, gets more difficult and steeper the further up you get. Took a bearing south from the plateau at the top of Fraughan Rock glen then climbed up a steep (unnamed) stream gorge which will bring you to T044 927 B.

The weather really took a turn for the worst at this point as we made our way towards the summit of Lugnaquillia. We continued due south before turning due west and proceeding up the easier ascent upto Lug summit. Before the summit however there is a god leg turn which on a day like today is very difficult to see so care is needed. Even with gaiters and all waterproof gear on the wind and rain was still getting in so by the time we reached the summit we were completely saturated.

We didnt hang around long as the weather was only getting worse so we decided to take the slightly longer but safer descent via the Camenabologue direction due north of Lug. Skirting the Glen of Imaal artillery range as shown on OS Map No. 56 is the safest route to follow, however this ground in the wet conditions is extremely tough going and boggy. Be prepared for a slog.

The hike upto Camenabologue was relatively straight forward from a navigational aspect but the ground was extremely muddy and made progress slow. From Camenabologue head due north and at T022 967 C hand right onto the track known locally as the table mountain track. This track heads directly back to the Baravore Carpark. Total time was 6 hours stopping twice for short tea breaks. Will come back another time hopefully in better conditions. Trackback: http://mountainviews.ie/summit/71/comment/4080/
