There are three mounds ('cairns') in a line just east of the summit. The name is clearly derived from Ir. Carn, 'cairn'. Carron Mountain is the 656th highest summit in Ireland. Carron Mountain is the most westerly summit in the Ballyhoura Mountains area.

Updated Summary The most westerly Ballyhouras
Short Summary created by simon3, jackill Sun 16 Jun From the west park at R58178 18377 (Point A) which is forest car park reached over a rough forest road from the public road. There is parking for at least 10 cars here. The OS 1:50k accurately shows tracks which you can follow to reach Carron and Little Carron.
From the east park at R66277 16805 (Point B), however there is barely room to park one car here at the roadside. A better option might be to park at R66494 16799 (Point C) and walk to the start.
Follow the track up to Long mountain and Seefin and then down to join the Ballyhoura way.
Follow the generally good track over the bog to Little Carron and then follow a good track west to the summit of Carron marked by a pile of stones.
There are good views over the surrounding countryside.
