Picture: Marking the indistinct top of Lugnagun

An indistinct high point.
by Harry Goodman  21 May 2012 On 29 March 2012 I parked off road O 018125 (Point A) and walked a short way N up the road to a metal gate. Once across I made my way NW around and through a heavy cluster of whin bushes to reach clear heather covered ground. After crossing a fence I met another fence line on my right running up the hillside which I followed to near the top, just short of the tree line. At this point I crossed the fence using stones placed there for this purpose to a raised ditch running from S to N across the hill top and skirting the treeline. As already indicated by others the unmarked top lies along this ditch and having been there I have no grounds to challenge the currently listed high point but for anyone in doubt as to the true top a short walk along the length of the ditch will cross the high point! Further along, the ditch and the forest edge turned sharply left downhill at a point where a well made step stile facilitated my crossing over onto a well trodden track. I followed the track down along the top of the ditch for some 200m to meet a N to S forest road but went no further given my car was on the other side of the hill. Clearly this and other forest tracks could be used as an alternative access point for Lugnagun. I returned by my outward route. In all just over 2k up and down in 30/40 minutes.
Point A: O018 125
