The modern anglicisation suggests an original Irish name Fán an Iarainn, 'slope of the iron'. However, as Price points out, there is no evidence for iron mining in this area and the historic forms of the name (recorded as early as the 13th c.) make i

Leaving Glenmalure Lodge head up the Military Road towards Drumgoff. At approximately T 102 893(Point A) (Point A) there is a forestry track and barrier on the left. Head down this track and after a few minutes emerge from the forest into the meadows below Fananierin. (photo shows meadow from above). Pick a route across the fields and up to the ridge. It is a short climb but i was breathing heavily when i got up! Turn left and find your way over a fence and across various rises to the featureless summit. Lovely views of Carriglineen, Slieve Maan, Croghanmoira and the mountains around Glenmalure. Return time from forest track approximately 45 mins. There was a great view into the valley below Croghanmoira too, and it would probably be a lovely walk along the ridge to Croghanmoira herself.

This is the first photo of Fananierin on the website, I think, and was taken from the south-facing slope of Kirikee. Behind the summit stretches a thickly heather-cloaked ridge of the same name back to the unnamed hill at the top. To the left lies Croaghanmoira (unseen) and to the right the heavily afforested slope of Slieve Maan. Much of the lower wooded flanks of the mountain belongs to Ballinacor Estate and is preserved land. Although not as badly scoured by the passage of ice as the south face of Carriglineen on the other side of the Avonbeg River valley, it still shows some signs of its dramatic past. A view of Fananierin from the road about 1.5km SW of Glenmalure. A couple of hundred metres further along this road there is a short forest track (with room to park) which leads to an open field. Go through a gate and follow the track up to the saddle and then turn NE for the top. An easy walk but rewards with great views of the glacial valley. (Comment Rating 3.00)

A route to the Ballinacor horseshoe
by Jfcrebbin 13 Feb 2011
Completed an exploratory walk 12/2/2011with a view to leading a group later on. We tried crossing the Drumgoff Brook but found it to be too fast flowing and further up it becomes a ravine. Therefore the only practical access is to follow the forest track (entered south of the ruined barracks) and to ford the brook just past an abandoned cart. This was done on a day following moderate rain and with good boots and gaiters the feet stayed dry. The northerly spur is steep and quite boggy. Views from the top are most rewarding, particularly the fine view up Glenmalure. This makes quite a good access point for making a horseshoe tour of the Balinacor estate, taking in a fine ridge walk encompassing Croaghnamoira and Ballinacor Mountain.
