An eastern approach
Short Summary created by wicklore  24 Jul 2010 Knockahunna can be reached from the east by turning up a minor road at S31437 32662 (Point A). This ends in a farmers track and a closed gate at S31295 32786 (Point B). Permission can be sought from the house on the left to use this track. Follow this track up leaving all gates as you find them. You will emerge on the lower eastern heathery slopes of Knockahunna. Head either directly uphill to the summit across heather or else walk north over the heather for a few hundred metres to meet an access track that leads steeply up to the summit. Views are excellent both across to nearby Slievenamon or east to the Blackstairs in the distance.

by john_desmond  3 Jun 2006 Knockahunna is located on it's own just to the North of Slievenamon. It can easily be included as part of a 5 hour Slievenamon walk. Start the walk from the Kilcash side at S318 288 (Point C). Follow the path up as far as the forest corner at S306 298 (Point D) and then contour around the East side of Slievenamon to the cairn on Sheegouna. From there, head NW down to the saddle and up to Knockahunna. There isn't much on the summit except for an old cairn and a small concrete hut. There are some nice views from it to the North and East. From there, head towards Carrickabrock. Don't try the direct route as the heather in the saddle is up to 1 metre high in places and it's tough going. Try instead to head back towards Sheegouna and contour around the high heather. From the saddle by Carrickabrock, make the final ascent to Slievenamon and then back to Kilcash. About 5 hours overall and not too hard a walk.

by csd  10 Sep 2006 The hut at the top of Knockahunna is an old TV retransmitter, which seem to plague the summits of the South East. There's one near the summit of Slievenamon too. Now that Sky has made these eyesores obsolete, I wonder if any of the government agencies would be interested in organising their removal. Knockahunna's one still has heavy duty lead-acid batteries inside.
