West is best
Short Summary created by jackill, thomas_g  15 Jul 2012 While it's possible to get here from Nowen Hill, it's probably preferable to approach from the west. Park at W10378 51710 (Point A) a gated track entrance, room for 2 cars (just) and follow the track up the hill, keeping right at a fork. This track will lead to a small gate at W11081 51903 (Point B) which allows access to open mountain. Head for Nowen Hill SW keep to the high ground along the ridge. The long grass can make for slow going and it's a bit boggy in the dip between Nowen Far west and Nowen SW, but fine otherwise.
Point A: W10378 51710 Point B: W11081 51903

by john_desmond  22 Apr 2006 This summit is located about 1.5 kms SW of Nowen Hill in West Cork. It can be accessed from the road that runs up to Nowen Hill although you do need to negotiate your way through some trees, fences and some boggy ground. It is probably not the nicest or best way to approach this summit. There are some access issues with the road that runs up to Nowen and the way through the forest on the way is boring as the views are blocked. If I was going to do this summit again, I'd probably look into approaching it from the road that runs 2 kms to the West and take in Derreenacrinnig West along the way. At least with this route, you will have constant views of West Cork. The summit itself is marked by a trig point which has seen better days. The view from here is really nice as you can see Bantry Bay and the Beara peninsula to the South-West. Looking North-West, you can see the peaks around Knockboy, the highest in County Cork.

by Colin Murphy  20 May 2008 After taking the coniferous track up to Nowen and having viewed its summit's charming pylons and masts, we set off south west along the edge of the woods - experiencing similar conditions to John Desmond - extremely boggy going - we eventually reached Nowen SW Top after about 45 minutes. Its summit is marked by a rapidly decaying trig pillar. Nice if not spectacular views from top and at least it didn't reverberate with the hum of electricity like its bigger brother. Rather than retrace our steps we headed in a north easterly direction and eventually found a way back on to the Nowen track through the horrible conifers. Total round trip 2 hours 45 minutes, slowed considerably by bogginess and trees.
