Bleck Cra on Galtybeg, 2008
by Bleck Cra  14 May 2008
Someone once said that the thing you fear most has already happened. At the inclement turn of last year, I posted on mvs a piece about the Galtees and a day replete with misery, “misplaced” bearings, danger and a longing never to go back. The hillwalk-from-Hell included an awful and tortuous trail back courtesy of John Loudon MacAdam. May his tarry bones…….. Hours later, in front of a roaring fire, I resolved never again to goad the Galtees when they were dispeptic, but only in the blazing sun amongst many human beings. So when the Ballyhoura Bears Festival was recruiting takers, Cra proffered his name. This excellent event launched its Galtees A walk in blistering heat - requisite 1. Requisite 2, humans in abundance. A yomp East on to Farbreaga and a grumpy ascent to Greenane introduced us to the meat of the matter, Galty Beg, who in no small measure seeks to school us in the ways of his bigger brother, Galtymore. A handful of heavies at this point lit out on a challenge: a Eengleeshman with the ascending power of a sky rocket, a hybrid man/hare from North Kerry, the O’Driscoll More agus an Preachain Dubh. The O’Driscoll is as good as impossible to shift but was shifted; the Sassenach busted, baffled but against fearful opposition and Cra and the hybrid struck out for the finishing line off Slievecushnabinnia at a full-on sprint. His N would still be up my A had I not submitted at the finishing line - and we strolled off towards the pub. Sadly the pub was left of the gate, not right, so 5 miles later I was back on the same road Maister MacAdam laid down to torture me four months earlier - da da da, dada la meme chose Trackback: http://mountainviews.ie/summit/41/comment/3104/
