Benbulbin, with its limestone escarpment resembling the prow of a ship, is one of the most recognisable Irish mountains. It is also steeped in legend. It takes its name from Conall Gulban, son of Niall of the Nine hostages, who was fostered here. Fionn Mac Cumhaill finds his son Oisín naked under a rowan tree on Benbulben, having not seen him for seven years. It is also the spot where Diarmuid Ó Duibhne is finally killed by a boar, after he and Gráinne have been pursued for many years throughout Ireland by Fionn. Sometimes spelt Benbulben.   Benbulbin is the 485th highest summit in Ireland. Benbulbin is the most westerly summit in the Dartry Mountains area.

Wow ! Where am I?
by camlinramblers  5 Nov 2012
We climbed Ben Bulben in October 2012 and had planned to walk east from King's Valley. After five minutes we encountered so much dense cloud that we altered our route for safety reasons and headed north and west on a better known route. Later, the western wind dispersed the cloud to reveal again paradise on high! The accompanying picture captured one of those transitionary moments looking east from the area of King's Mountain over Glencar - but where is the lake - we know it is there?
