Nephin is a problematic name and few sources venture an interpretation. It is mentioned as one of the twelve great mountains of Ireland in Cath Maige Tuired (The Second Battle of Moyturra), where it is called Nemthenn. This is suggestive of nemeton, a   Nephin is the highest mountain in the North Mayo area and the 36th highest in Ireland. Nephin is the second highest point in county Mayo.

Anything but dull ...
by osullivanm  23 Apr 2012 Having read the many comments on Nephin, we decided to take the route as described by Harry Goodman happy in the knowledge that we were welcome to take this route. We climbed Nephin on Friday 20/4/2012 and our experience was almost identical to that described by Harry. We met the friendly farmer and his wife (preceded by a slighly frightening approach by their eight dogs) and were assured that we were very welcome to climb Nephin and were directed to the stiles he had put in place for walkers.
It was a remarkably sunny day which made for great views during the whole c. 800m ascent , culminating in a 360 degree panoramic view at the top. After a leisurely descent we had a lovely chat with the farmer who was tending the many sheep and lambs (including three black ones) around the farmhouse.
