Approach from the west
Short Summary created by Colin Murphy  17 May 2011 There is room for one car at V 036 698 (Point A), at the entrance to a short farmhouse track. Directly across the road another track leads to the NE, although you will need to cross several gates. After 500m at point V 038 702 (Point B) this forks. Take the track to the left which becomes a meandering forest trail. Continue up this for 1km until the forest ends and the open hillside appears at V 050 707 (Point C). Turn to the east, following the forest line which then swings to the SSE - a track runs alongside the forest line but it is completely impassable in places so you are advised to walk alongside this through heather. You will also need to cross several highly irritating barbed wire fences. You will reach the open hillside at V054 704 (Point D) with Carran Far North ahead of you 400m to the SE, which must be traversed to reach the NE Top. The climb here becomes fairly steep over the next few hundred metres. The approach to this summit is marked by several large rocky outcrops and the top itself features a small pile of stones atop a small bump of rock and peat. Continue from this point directly to the SE, crossing several more barbed wire fences. The terrain dips down to approx 480m altitude after 1km, before rising, not too steeply again at point V065 697 (Point E). Continue to the SE from there for 400m to attain the summit, which is marked by a long, narrow, rocky outcrop topped by a small pile of rocks. Time to summit from car, 2 hours approx.

by simon3  5 Apr 2006 This picture shows the summit taken from near the top of Carran.

Off the left shoulder is a view of the Coomagearlahy wind turbines, unfinished at the time.

Beyond them and dimly through the haze on the skyline, two similar rounded peaks - The Paps.

Ah c'mon CV, Paul Henry wasn't bad at all at all. Have to say I'm a fan. Sure his paintings are a bit dull in colour, but there's a certain sense of mystery and beauty to those purples and greys, ...
