As Tough as it can be in Wicklow mountains
by Sarkuns  20 Sep 2013
I was planing this climb since the start of the year. But I was a bit scared of this one. I didn't dare to Take Tonelagee alone so I was waiting for an opportunity to come along. And on 14913 I finally got the chance. With my friend and blessing from Irish weather goods we were able to walk my long prepared 20 km route.
Glenmacnass Car Park ---> Tonelagee NE Top ---> Tonelagee ---> Stoney Top ---> Kanturk ---> Scar ---> Glenmacnass Car Park
Around 20 Km
approximately 4 h

Of course In this comment only about Tonelagee

The route
We start from Glenmacnass Car Park and first thing in the list was crossing the Glenmacnass river. Then thru the woodland almost in straight line and in a blink of an eye you have brilliant view over the valley. Then following the forest ridge we went around pretty deep gully. After that we left the fores behind us and went straight un Tonelagee NE top. From there forward to Tonelagee.

Conditions
As I write before we had the luxury of perfect weather so the river let us across peacefully.
The forest tracks where unmistakeable (On bad weather (RAIN) conditions tracks will be muddy and very slippery ).
Path around the forest and up to NE Top was over grown muddy and full with watery holes. Sometimes hard to see a path at all. Perfect place to test your waterproof boots... If you don't have them think twice before sing up to this one.
It turns out that my hiking boots where not waterproof as it was written on the box. So I was forced to walk the rest of the way with wet feet... my good walking socks save the day only because of them I was able to do it without discomfort.
The hardest part was to get up to Tonelagee. I have to say that it is the toughest mountain in Wicklow. Very steep, eroded and physically demanding path leads up to the very top.

Overall
It was harder than ever before and I know this was My best and the most exiting day in Wicklow . Trackback: http://mountainviews.ie/summit/33/comment/15193/
