Sruffering in the mist

by Colin Murphy 30 Sep 2011 Took in this top on my return from Annatoran to Easky Lough Car Park, which only involved a 30 minute detour and an ascent of about 35m. The day being as wet, miserable and misty as is possible within the realms of things climatological,so I can report little on the views. The climb was relatively easy despite the sodden ground and I encountered no peat hags etc to impede the approach. The top is marked by a small pile of stones and I concur with Simon3's GPS reading of approximately 410m. It took just 20 minutes to return to car park from top. The prettiest view I had all day was of the large, strikingly coloured mushroom I spotted on the descent...see pic below.

by simon3 15 May 2007 This is a smallish top visible SE from the car park at Easky Lough. It's covered in heather with a steep boulder strewn (but climbable) slope towards the road and Easky Lough. According to my GPS it could be nearer 410m than the height given on the map. There's a bunch of large erratics north of it and a pond. Such excitement.

The photo taken from the summit shows the south end of Easky Lough. The slight bump on the left skyline is another 400m summit in the Ox Mountains, namely Largan Hill, while the blue peak on the right skyline is the solitary Nephin on the other side of Lough Conn., nearly lost to the Rayleigh & Mie scattering which bedevils mountain photography

A Slightly Erratic Approach

by gerrym 13 Jun 2012 A short walk of less than an hour to the summit, starting from the small carpark at the northern end of Easky Lough (44905 23723 (Point A)). This is a stunning setting and it would be tempting to sit by the shores of the Lough without climbing the slopes reaching high above.

Take to the hillside past a small quarried area next to the carpark to reach a fence which finds the Sruffaungarve river. This provides a line of ascent on mostly easy grassy ground beside the river, negotiating between boulders on the way. Great views over Easky Lough soon appear and beyond shafts of light brought the slumbering giants of Mayo into view.

A group of large erratic boulders provide an immediate target on the way up to the plateau(45419 13659 (Point B)). On reaching the plateau a further and more impressive group of erractics and small lough are reached (45612 23531 (Point C)). This is a fantastic spot to clamber over the boulders trying to get good photos or just to explore.

Drop slightly passing two small pools of water (45602 23280 (Point D)) before rising to the top of Sruffaungarve. The ground on the way up was damp even after a prolonged dry spell - at the top a small pile of stones marked the top (45437 23008 (Point E)) at a height of 407m.

Views reach over Easky Lough SW to the bulk of Nephin, Nephin Beg, Slieve Carr and others and N to the cliffs of Slieve League. The high Ox plateau takes up most of the views to the E as it rises to over 500m.

An easy return back to the carpark would be by same route but my plan was to visit Knockalongy and Annatoran. This involved dropping down NE to pick up and follow the river appearing from the slopes just below summit of Knockalongy.

A great walk on its own giving much reward for not much effort with options to explore the higher plateau and highest hills of the Ox. As others have said these hills are best left for that long dry spell that we get now and again!
