Locally the name is understood as Sliabh Fathaigh, 'mountain of the giant', which accounts for the anglicised form “Foye” and ties in with local lore about a giant being discernible among the summit rocks. According to one version of the story, it   Slieve Foye is the highest mountain in the Cooley/Gullion area and the 299th highest in Ireland. Slieve Foye is the most southerly summit and also the most easterly in the Cooley/Gullion area. Slieve Foye is the highest point in county Louth.
