As this peak is rather far from any castle (at Castledrum or Castlemaine), it may be simply named from its commanding position.   Castle Hill is the 272nd highest place in Ireland.

Castles in the air
by Colin Murphy  10 Apr 2015
Directly to the south of Castle Hill is a small road leading to a farmhouse at Q 763 033 A. At the top of this road, a drivable lane continues up another 600m, so I called in at the farmhouse to ask permission to use it, but there was no one about so I took my chances. This lane ends in three gates at Q758 045 B, where there is just about room to turn and park without blocking the entrances (see pic). I continued up a rough track driectly north for a couple of hundred metres before beginning a gradual ascent which becomes increasingly steeper as you climb. The terrain was easy enough, with short grass and short heather and firm underfoot after a long dry spell. At about 250m ascent the climb becomes quite steep and this continues all the way to the summit, which is marked by a small hump of turf topped by a few stones. It is a fine hill with a defined top and some interesting rocky outcrops along the way. To and from car took a little over 2 hours. Fantastic views all around, particularly of Castlemaine harbour to the south. Trackback: http://mountainviews.ie/summit/276/comment/17914/
