Work of art in the hills
by wicklore 27 Aug 2010
csd shows us the dilapidated and makeshift shed/aerial structure near the summit of Coumaraglin. I discovered another work of pride set into the bog in the vicinity of B (S2825 0404) close to the steep sides of the coum. My photo shows this curious structure. What is particularly striking is that this structure has power or other lines connected to it. The bog was dug up and replaced to lay these lines and the evidence of the ground disturbance is visible in the area, with some debris and cables lying around. If this is a relay mast or telecommunications gizmo, is it safe to be able to stand next to it? Also, neither this structure nor the larger monstrosity shown by csd have any identifying marks whatsoever, even though someone is clearly paying for the service and someone owns the property. Perhaps they are too embarrassed to claim ownership? Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/249/comment/6058/

Unfortunately Coumaraglin hasn't escaped the blight of TV deflector systems that litter the summits of the Comeraghs and surrounding area. I presume this is an example of one such enterprise, there being no security fence or signage proclaiming ownership by one of the established companies. Indeed, if the shoddy wiring and discarded leaky car batteries are anything to go by, the builders of this 'masterpiece' take no pride whatsoever in their workmanship. One for Waterford County Council to remove! Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/249/comment/4370/

I had a most unusual walk on Coumaraglin yesterday wed 19 mar 2009. I started walking from the car park at C (S276 018). at 10.23 am. There is a small track leading up onto the hills that make for easier access. I could not use the track as I was completely surrounded by low lying fog. Map and compass were in urgent use as I made my way to the spot height 494, at about this point I stepped out of the fog and into glorious sunshine. it was almost eerie to be above the fog yet below the sparse cloud cover. From here I travelled onto the saddle between farbreaga and coumaraglin, now I could put away the map and compass as I was able to follow the sheep fence all the way to the summit of coumaraglin, down to the standing stone and onto Seefin, my destination. An invigorating 2 hour walk. It is not a peak I will vist often, too much signs of man and industry. I retraced steps back to the car arriving at 14.03. all in all and exciting walk and another two peaks under my belt in my attempt to summit all our peaks over 600 meters this year. As you head around the southern end of the monavullaghs, there are a number of boreens that head up to forestry on the southern slopes. They provide good clear, unfenced access for nice walk up to the summit. You walk around the top of a nice coum, typical of the comeraghs and the along a broad ridge to Seefin, with it's hut and masts at the summit. We did it as a good day walk, starting at Coumaraglin and going via Seefin and Coumfea to drop down into a finish at mahon falls. If we were feeling energertic, a really good walk would have been to continue on to the next ridge, overlooking coumshingaun and come down that way to Mahon falls. From Coumaraglin Mountain looking down along the fence to the standing stone(white dot on left side of photo)and ring fort D (S279 053)(not marked on the 1:50000 map).Seefins summit sits in shadow behind on the left of photo.
Starting at the carpark at E (S278 019) - up the track past the standing stone and cairns on Treenearla commons to point 494 mtrs (which seems to be approx 45 mtrs away from the small cairn someones built) then on to point 593 mtrs Farbreaga over Dungarvan bay,on to Coumaraglin mountain with its abandoned TV transmitter.
Down the col past the standing stone before the last short climb to Seefins summit.Return to the carpark by the same route, 11 kms - 4 hrs.
