There are three mounds ('cairns') in a line just east of the summit. The name is clearly derived from Ir. Carn, 'cairn'. Carron Mountain is the 656th highest summit in Ireland. Carron Mountain is the most westerly summit in the Ballyhoura Mountains area. Our data has reached 51% of the goal for this summit. (Details)

The most westerly Ballyhouras

Short Summary created by jackill 3 Aug 2012 Park at R66277 16805 (Point A), however there is barely room to park one car here at the roadside. A better option might be to park at R66494 16799 (Point B) and walk to the start.
Follow the track up to Long mountain and Seefin and then down to join the Ballyhoura way.
I then followed the generally good track over the bog to Little Carron.
There is quite a large mast and buildings near the summit which has extensive bike damage
From Little Carron follow a good track west to the summit of Carron marked by a pile of stones.

Carron - access

by hivisibility 1 Jan 2013 For those who might like to experience an easier access to Corrin (especially as it’s brutally wet on the Ballyhoura Way between Seefin and Corrin at the minute!) one can access the loop walks in Ballinaboola wood, which is located on the road linking Ballyhea and Ardpatrick. (R575186 (Point C)). If coming from Cork turn right at Ballyhea church and continue on for approx 2.2 miles, watch out for the wood on the right,signposted Ballyhoura Way. From Ardpatrick it’s a longer spin, pass straight through 3 crossroads and the trail will be shortly after the third crossroads on your left.
There are 2 car parks available, with plenty room for cars. On the roadside, or if you prefer, you can drive up the trail to an upper park which is bigger approx 5 minutes up. Personally I prefer to park at roadside.
Once parked continue straight up the trail until you meet the Ballyhoura Way coming from your right. (R583181 (Point D)). From here all you have to do is to follow the yellow Ballyhoura Way markers which lead all the way up, until you reach the col between Corrin and little Corrin at R607178 (Point E). The Ballyhoura Way now switches left but Corrin summit is less than 3 minutes on your right.
The route is mostly forest track but good walking boots would be handy for the final segment as it’s a bit wet there at the moment. T o return simply retrace your steps.

by jackill 21 Aug 2007 After Little Carron I continued on the Ballyhoura way to Carron. The summit of this mountain is marked by a large cairn, this summit is about 300 meters from the co-ordinates given here.
There are pleasent views over the plains of Limerick to the north and west to the highlands of Kerry.

by enoonan 18 Apr 2008 The walk from Little Carron to Carron mountain is very short and only takes a matter of minutes. The views from Carron mountain however are fantastic. I was lucky to have been there on a very clear day which gave me visibility all the way to Killarney. Brilliant.
