Impressive outlier of the main summit
Short Summary created by wicklore  29 Apr 2011
Binn idir an dà Log Se Top, as its name suggests, lies to the SE of the main Binn idir summit. More precisely, it is situated across the large corrie to the east of Binn idir an dà Log. The upper few hundred metres of these mountains are pure quartzite, so good footwear is needed to walk on the fields of shattered stone and follow the sandy trails carved out by countless boots.

One approach from the south, via Binn Chaonaigh, is to start from the car park at L893 495 starA. Follow the good track up to the col between Binn Mhòr and Binn Chaonaigh, known as Maumeen, where there is a Chapel and Holy Well at 250 metres. Turn left to climb 400 metres up to Binn Chaonaigh over initial steep grassy slopes and then shattered rock. From Binn Chaonaigh there is a ridge leading to Binn idir an dà Log SE Top. While hugely impressive amongst the rocky landscape, the ridge is wide enough to be quite safe. (about 80 metres). However care is needed throughout the walk as some sections are steep.

From the north, an option is to park at L878 557 starB, where a track heads off the road. Follow the track south to approx L880 541 starC and climb up steep grassy slopes to Maumahoge at L877 537 starD. Follow a steep rocky ridge above the lake north for about 1.5kms to the summit of Binn idir an dà Log before following the winding ridge around the corrie to the SE Top.

Any walk in the Maamturks should be undertaken with care as there are few escape options if bad weather descends or you get tired. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/174/comment/4934/

The SE top of Binn idir an Dá Log isn't named on the Harvey map, but I'm assuming it's the 659 metre summit indicated on this map. The picture shows the SE top (R) and Binn idir an Dá Log itself (centre, distant), viewed from Binn Chaonaigh. There traverse across from Binn Chaonaigh is straightforward enough - especially in weather like this! Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/174/comment/405/

A splendid view of the Coum between the Binn idir an dá Log summits. The highest point in the Maamturks (at 702m) is on the left, whereas the lower SE top (659m) is on the right. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/174/comment/3569/

The top of this mountain has a great view of the eastern 'Turks such as Binn Chaoinaigh to the right with its white graveyard path, joined to Binn Mhairg. Beyond, the tops of the first quarter of the 'Turks are visible such as Corcóg to the left skyline and Binn Mhór to the right. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/174/comment/23526/
