Barbed ascent
Short Summary created by Colin Murphy  17 May 2011 There is room for one car to park at V 036 698 (Point A) (Point A), at the entrance to a short track up to a farmhouse. Almost directly across the road another track leads to the NE, although you will need to cross several gates as you go. After about 500m at point V 038 702 (Point B) (Point B) this forks. Take the track to the left which soon becomes a meandering forest trail. Continue up this gently rising track for 1km until the forest ends and the open hillside appears at V 050 707 (Point C) (Point C). Turn to the east for about 300m, following the forest line which then swings to the SSE - a track runs alongside the forest line but it is completely impassable in places so you are advised to walk alongside this through the heather. You will also need to cross several highly irritating barbed wire fences. You will reach the open hillside at V054 704 (Point D) with Carran Far North rising ahead of you 400m to the SE. The climb becomes fairly steep over the final few hundred metres, but the going underfoot is mostly short grass or heather. The approach to the summit is marked by several large rocky outcrops and the top itself features a small pile of stones and an upright pole atop a small bump of rock and peat. Time to summit 1 hour 30 minutes.

by osullivanm  4 Apr 2006 Follow the R569 east of Kenmare for c. 10 km - a right turn brings you onto a twisting road wich eventually winds its way around to Knockanuha Mtn. The drive itself is delightful - a remote valley with lovely views of lesser peaks such as Bird Mtn. and Gullaba Hill. A good track continues from the road and allows a gentle climb to Carran Far North Top. While not spectacular, the top provides a good starting point for a "circuit of Carran" with a descent possible from the col between Carran and Knockantooreen.

Follow the farm track
by thomas_g  23 Feb 2013 If you are approaching from the west (road south of Knockanuha) please do not park on the corner at W04199 68795 (Point E) (Point E) (junction of road and track), the farmer(who likes walkers) has told me that people park there and delivery trucks can't get up the road and on occasion he's had to follow walkers up the mountain to get the keys to move their car: please park in the farm yard of the first little cottage.
With the farmers permission, there is a good farm track most of the way to the top from the upper (bigger) farmhouse which would make for an easier start than the track at W04199 68795 (Point E) (Point E).

by simon3  2 Apr 2006 Carran Far North Top (CFNT) is the north most outlier of the seldom visited Carran group. To the north the Mangerton group is very visible. Mangertonbeg (388m) for example at 10k away, is beyond and directly in line with Kilgarvan the nearest town to CFNT.

The photo shows the great sweeping view of the remote and steep side of the north ridge leading eventually to Knockboy (not shown).
