A compact horseshoe walk in the northern Tweve Bens
by liz50  16 Oct 2012 Climbed Knockbrack as part of a pleasant horseshoe walk of approx 4 hours starting from Kylemore Abbey. Turning left out of the carpark walk along N59 for approx 300m before taking a track on the right at L75185 58057 (Point A). Follow the track past a lime kiln and well before climbing steeply up the northern slope of Benbaun to the summit L765 568 (Point B). Drop down steeply to the south to the col with Benbrack at L766 567 (Point C). Then follows a long gradual ascent up to the summit of Benbrack L765 558 (Point D). Continue almost due west dropping down to a small lake before turning northwest to follow a broad ridge down to the col with Knockbrack L756 562 (Point E) before the gentle ascent to the summit of Knockbrack L749 565 (Point F). From the summit after taking in the fine views of the main summits of the Tweve Bens and Kylemore Abbey nestling in the valley below head West for approx 100 m before dropping steeply down the northwest shoulder aiming to pick up a path along side the Polladirk River at L74109 57318 (Point G). Follow the path through old farm buildings and two gates before meeting a track. Turn left onto the track which brings you back to the N59. It is then a few minutes walk back to your starting point.
Point A: L75185 58057 Point B: L765 568 Point C: L766 567
Point D: L765 558 Point E: L756 562 Point F: L749 565
Point G: L74109 57318 (turn area map On)
